It's one of the most common questions we get at the front desk: what's actually the difference between SNS, Gel-X, and dip powder, and which one will hold up the longest? The honest answer is that they're built differently, they wear differently, and the right choice depends more on your nails and your lifestyle than on which one is "best" in the abstract.
SNS (dip powder)
SNS is a dip powder system: your nail is coated in a bonding base, dipped into a colored powder, then sealed, with no UV lamp required. It builds a naturally strong, lightweight layer over your own nail, and it tends to be the most chip-resistant of the three, typically holding up for three to four weeks on healthy nails with proper care. Because the color is baked into the powder itself rather than sitting on top as polish, the finish also tends to stay looking fresh for longer without the tip growing out and looking dull.
Gel-X
Gel-X uses a soft gel extension tip bonded to your natural nail with a builder gel, cured under a lamp. It's the system to reach for if you want extra length without the weight or damage risk of traditional acrylic. Gel-X typically lasts around three to four weeks as well, though it's a little more dependent on how it's maintained. If you're hard on your hands, day to day wear can shorten that a bit, since it's an extension rather than a coating over your natural nail.
Traditional gel polish
Standard gel polish, cured under UV or LED light, is the shortest-lived of the three, generally lasting two to three weeks before it needs a fill or removal. It's a great option if you like changing your color often or you're not ready to commit to a powder or extension system, but if longevity is your main priority, it's usually the one to skip.
So which one should you book?
- Want the most chip-resistant, longest-wearing natural-nail option: SNS Dipping
- Want extra length without traditional acrylic: Gel-X
- Want a quick, flexible color change and don't mind more frequent visits: Gel Manicure
If you're still not sure, tell your technician what you actually do with your hands day to day, gardening, gym, typing all day, parenting a toddler, and they'll steer you toward the system that will actually hold up for you. We offer all three at our Roswell Rd salon, along with ombré and fill-in options for SNS and acrylic if you'd rather maintain a set than start fresh each time.
